The project had been made by Japan's Ministry of Labor with the purpose of supporting women working in Japanese society, which is, even today, still largely male-oriented. Christmas Illumination November 13, the first-light ceremony of Mikimoto Christmas Illumination 1999 was held at Mikimoto Plaza in Ginza, Tokyo. Reiko Chikada Lighting Design Inc. has been taking charge of this annual project since 1992. The ten-meter-high crest tree is dressed up in red, blue and white lights. Looking forward the next millennium, the illumination features futuristic illusion. Glass figurines are modeled after tin toy robots, in their bodies are liquid-crystal displays, where visions flash over and over. There appears an image of children from every part of the world, or a vast command of outer space deeper in the sky. The installation is until December 25 at the Mikimoto Plaza in Ginza, Tokyo.
