Kyoto Daimonji-yaki "Lightdown" Research Project In 1996, Kyoto-shi government proposed a one-hour "lightdown" on August 16, which means voluntary control of illuminating fixtures throughout the city. August 16 was the day of annual fire feast of Kyoto, called Daimonji-yaki, where thousands of fires shine making a huge symbol or character on each surface of the mountains surrounding the city. We at Reiko Chikada Lighting Design Inc. observed the entire process and recorded its consequences, in order to contribute the National Environment Agency's project of instituting a guideline for desirable lighting environment.
