The construction of Academy Common, Meiji University Surugadai Campus was completed in spring, 2004. Along with the Liberty Tower (1998), the project is a part of the campus's reconstruction plan. We have been taking a role in the plan as the lighting director from the first moment. In accordance with the primary concept "an urban campus opened to the town," Academy Common is designed as a large buffer space between Meidai-dori Avenue and Liberty Tower's entrance gate. Students walking to every direction come across each other at this place. The lighting concept was to make Liberty Tower an outstanding light-emitting box in the heart of the town and create a key feature of Surugadai town by harmonizing the tower, artistic sculptures in the zone and the town itself.
