City.People.Light Award

Kanazawa city was awarded the third prize in the 2011 city.people.light awards, the annual global competition of urban lighting. It was the first time a Japanese city has ever won this award.

The judges highly evaluated the city's lighting plan. "The lighting project in Kanazawa represents the image and identity of the city by creating a harmony between the nocturnal lighting scheme of the city of Kanazawa and Kanazawa Castle Park, enabling residents and visitors to share the historical and cultural experience of the city."

In the round-table talk for journalists held on December 1, Kanazawa city's approach to the nocturnal lighting scheme was introduced by Danny Risberg (CEO, Philips Electronics Japan, Ltd.), Reiko Chikada (Kanazawa Castle Park Lighting Supervisor), Ichiro Mizuno (the head of Kanazawa City Landscape Advisory Board and professor at Kanazawa Institute of Technology), Hidetaka Fujishima (Director, Kanazawa Noh Museum), Hiroshi Nishikawa (Kanazawa City Urban Development Department). In the ceremony held at Kanazawa City Hall, the Kanazawa city mayor received the trophy from Robert Rijken (Trade officer, Consulate General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands) and Danny Risberg.
