Okayama Korakuen "Garden of Dreams"

Reiko Chikada Lighting Design Inc. designed Okayama Korakuen "Garden of Dreams" illumination in summer. The large lawn area, the Sawa-no-ike Pond, the Naka-no-shima Island, the Mino-shima Island, and the Jari-jima Island are lit up in addition to the Kakumei-kan Guest House and the Enyo-tei House that were illuminated in the spring illumination. In the lawn area, we created a sea of firefly with solar-powered small lights. And for the Sawa-no-ike Pond and the islands, we lit up the bridge and the teahouse, paying special attention to avoid glares to the people walking around the pond, to form clear and impressive scenery reflected on the surface of the water.

The 2016 IES Illumination Award of Merit

Reiko Chikada Lighting Design Inc. received the 2016 IES Illumination Award of Merit for "Toin Kaikan (Architect: Architect 5)" and "Jyozaiji Temple (Architect:Suiundo, Kentaro Ataka Architectural Design, and Iwaki)". Toin Hall is an alumni association hall built to celebrate its 120-year anniversary. The construction costs were mostly covered by graduates’ donation; the budget was very tight and the running costs had to be minimum. And in our lighting design for Jyozaiji Temple, we emphasized its presence at night for increasing Buddhist memorial services starting from the evening. At night, the illuminated pagoda erases the gloomy image of the community road that cuts through the cemetery and creates a pleasant atmosphere for the surrounding residences.

Okayama Korakuen, Kakumei-kan Guest House and Enyo-tei House Illumination

Okayama Korakuen is one of the three great gardens of Japan. We designed the illumination of two main features of the garden in its special illumination event, "The Fantastic Spring Garden", held from April 29 to May 31:? the Kakumei-kan Guest House that conveys old samurai residence and the Enyo-tei House which had been used as a lounge when the domain lord visited the place.

Okayama Korakuen, Kakumei-kan Guest House and Enyo-tei House Illumination

Okayama Korakuen is one of the three great gardens of Japan. The Kakumei-kan Guest House is a building that conveys old samurai residence and is used by citizens for wedding ceremonies and alumni events. The Enyo-tei House used be the most important structure in the garden that was used as a lounge when the domain lord visited the place. Our lighting design of Kakumei-kan Guest House and Enyo-tei House, "The Fantastic Spring Garden", aimed to create an elegant night view expressing the presence of the domain lord and the time he spent in the garden. We illuminated the roof surface, the roof ridgelines, the eaves, and the gables of the buildings to dynamically connect the Kakumei-kan Guest House/Enyo-tei House with the Okayama Castle in the distance. Paper lanterns with swinging soft candlelights are placed inside the buildings. In addition, pale blue lighting on the white sand in the west side of Kakumei-kan Guest House expresses the beautiful waterscape of streams in the garden. The Fantastic Spring Garden is held from April 29 (Fri. Holiday) to May 31 (Tue.)

"Hana Moyu" Illumination

Motohiko Katori, the first Gunma prefectural governor after the Meiji Restoration, was married to Fumi, the heroine of 2015 NHK historical drama "Hana Moyu (burning flower) " which has been broadcasted since January 4, 2015. Some buildings, Jomo Warehouse head office brick warehouses, Maebashi City Museum of Literature and Hirosegawa Museum are illuminated with cherry blossom pink light to show the connection with "Hana Moyu. Central Maebashi Station is illuminated with fjord green light. The noble atmosphere of Saint Mattia Church and Maegbashi Catholic Church are emphasized by illuminating the white colored walls. Kigali City Urban Planning visit, Rwanda

Spotless streets and glassy office buildings. Kigali City Office is promoting a new city plan aiming to become one of the major urban cities in Africa. Staffs from Italy, the United States, Korea, and Singapore work in its City Planning Division. Reiko Chikada visited the Kigali City Office as a member of the Japan Urban Design Institute (JUDI) and received explanations on the city plan from the mayor and the city planning division chief. In 1994, Rwanda experienced the genocide dividing the country into two. President Paul Kagame who took office after the genocide held out the ideal of making Kigali a city open to the world. Kigali City is expected to embrace a population of 3-5 million over the next 50 years. Mr. Carl A. Worthington, an Architect in the United States, developed Kigali City master plan 9 years ago. We were guided to the large Business Center site (scheduled to be completed in 2025), the new bus terminals, the exclusive residential district development area, and the houses for the poor people and the people injured in the genocide. When we asked if there's any people protesting the eviction from the redevelopment area, the answer was "no." The city staffs explained to us that it is because all the evictions are decided by the community association called "UMUGANDA" consisting of 5 members selected from the local communities. UMUGANDA exists in the town and village level, the province level, and the national level. Many residential areas are redeveloped in the process of the rapid urbanization. I felt a little scary about the communities without any opponents. I also questioned about the urban lighting plan which is essential for safety in the city of "Clean, Green, and Safety." And their answer was: "We recognize the importance of urban lighting, but we cannot provide a sufficient budget for lighting." Three heritages in Rwanda are: a maze of streets in the Muslim residential district, the prison, and the residential district of "forest people" who live in the style of olden times. It is a crucial stage for Rwanda to advance modernization while maintaining its own cultural tradition.
